I grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, in a 1925 bungalow built by my great-uncle. While it was a modest house, its unassuming integrity and excellent construction made a lasting impression on me. Those builders understood the importance of good craftsmanship to creating homes of lasting value. They also knew that the beauty of good architectural detail arose as much from its utility as from its design. From the pursuit of practical and attractive methods of joining multiple surfaces, a resonant architectural language emerged. Today, when we enter a house in which the traditional architectural orders have been honored, it feels intrinsically “right”. I want my work to continue this legacy of attentiveness and care – the kind of refined craft and intuitive aesthetic sense that was once expected of all carpenters worthy of the name.
The essential beauty and function of the Colonial, Shaker, and Mission eras inform my design sensibility. They present a variety of visual textures, while adding enduring character to a home. Creating cabinetry and interior trim packages in these styles is challenging, pleasurable, and most of all rewarding. At the end of a project, the feeling of having created something as well as it can be made is only exceeded by the excitement of clients when they see their vision become tangible.
I make individual furniture pieces, custom cabinetry and built-ins, and interior trim packages. I can create a design, consult about different options, or produce a piece according to an existing plan. I work directly with homeowners, or as part of a larger team with architects, designers, or contractors. Call or email to set up an appointment. |
